Rahab: The Great Escape

This summer, we are camping out in Hebrews 11 to learn from a group of ordinary, everyday people who chose to live by faith rather than shrinking back. From Abel to Rahab, we’ll look closely at their distinguishing perseverance and inspiring trust in God amid hopeless-looking circumstances.

1. Faith is Belief

Strong’s concordance pis’tos = belief

Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God MUST BELIEVE that HE IS , and that HE IS a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

2. Faith, or Belief is based on content

Hebrews 11:1
Faith/belief is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

3. Faith is ACTING like God is telling the truth

John 20:29 NKJV
Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

1 Peter 1:8 NKJV
Whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory.

1. She heard and believed

Joshua 2:9-11 ESV
Before the men lay down, she came up to them. I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, you devoted to destruction. (And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you) for the Lord your God, HE IS God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God MUST BELIEVE that HE IS , and that HE IS a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

2. She asked because she believed!

Joshua 2:12-14 ESV
Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign/token that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”

God’s faithful loyal covenantal-covering of love, as promised in the covenant.

3. She believed and received the token the blood...

Joshua 2:21 KJV
And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

Hebrews 2:3
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;

Corey Russel
The cross revealed the depths of God’s hatred toward sin. There were many participants in the death of Jesus: Judas, the Pharisees, the Romans, Pilate, the Jews, me, you, the devil. But the participant I want to highlight is the Father. He was the chief agent of Jesus’ crucifixion. Scripture says it pleased the Father to crush Him (Isaiah 53:10). God’s hatred toward sin is so violent, pure, and absolute that He would rather have His Son die than allow sin to live on the earth. The Father did not flinch in the face of Jesus’ agony, but poured out the fullness of His divine wrath and judgment during the six hours He hung on that tree. Not all the vials of judgments, that have, or shall be poured out on the wicked world, nor the flaming furnace of a sinner’s conscience, nor the irreversible sentence pronounced against the rebellious devils, nor the groans of the damned creatures, give such a demonstration of God’s hatred of sin, as the wrath let loose upon his Son. Never did Divine holiness appear more beautiful and lovely, than at the time our Savior’s countenance was most marred in the midst of his dying groans.
