Noah

This summer, we are camping out in Hebrews 11 to learn from a group of ordinary, everyday people who chose to live by faith rather than shrinking back. From Abel to Rahab, we’ll look closely at their distinguishing perseverance and inspiring trust in God amid hopeless-looking circumstances.

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society."
Billy Graham

Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

“worlds” - aiōn - specific spans of time…

Hebrews 11:7
By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with Godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

1. Noah Was Different

Genesis 6:9
This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.

Noah was a righteous man.

Genesis 6:5
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of mankind was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. 6 So the Lord was sorry that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

Noah was walking with God when nobody else was!

1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Mark 3:20
Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

Genesis 6:8
Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Grace = The redemptive favor of a superior person to an inferior one.

2. Noah Was Quick & Patient

Genesis 6:13
So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth! 14 “Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with pitch, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. 15 Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. 16 Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper. 17 “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.

Genesis 6:22
Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

Noah immediately obeyed!

Hebrews 11:7
By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen,

2 Corinthians 5:7
For we live by faith, not by sight.

Hebrews 11:7
By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with Godly fear,

Godly fear = reverence

God is powerful enough to do anything and He's personal enough to do it for you.

3. Noah Was Bold

What could He do? - He could build a boat

What else could He do? - He could share God’s message

2 Peter 2:5
God did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness

Oh my brethren, Bold hearted men are always called mean-spirited by cowards!
Charles Spurgeon

What couldn’t He do? - He couldn’t get all the animals on the boat

Genesis 6:20 (ESV)
Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive.

What else couldn’t Noah do? - Noah couldn’t steer the boat

What else couldn’t Noah do? - Noah couldn’t close the door.

Genesis 7:15
Two by two they came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes. 16 A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord closed the door behind them.

Genesis 6:14
Waterproof it with pitch

Pitch = Atonement
